The gold on back-to-back nights at the Estadio Nacional, where the 1962 World Cup final was played, were joyous achievements but it is a double opportunity at soccer gold that really has Chilean hearts pounding. The Chilean men have never won Pan Am Games gold and only once before, in 1987, appeared in the final losing to Brazil while the women have never before got to the semi-finals. Andrea Vargas gave Costa Rica their first gold of the Games successfully defending her 2019 Pan Am title in the 100m hurdles while Brazil's Eduardo Rodrigues won the men's. Led by double Olympic champion McLain Ward the U.S. won the equestrian team jumping gold ahead of Canada and Brazil.

April 4 (Reuters) - The New Zealand women's soccer team will swap their home kit's white shorts for teal blue to ease players' period anxieties, the country's football association (NZF) said on Monday. "The absence of white shorts now is fantastic for women with any kind of period anxiety," New Zealand striker Hannah Wilkinson said. In the end it just helps us focus more on performance and shows a recognition and appreciation of women's health." NZF's decision follows similar moves by the England women's team, clubs including Manchester City and the Ireland women's rugby team. "As an organisation, New Zealand Football wholeheartedly supports the shift away from white shorts for our women's international players," chief executive Andrew Pragnell said.

"Few people have done more for soccer or women's sport in this country than Christine," said Bontis. "She has not only inspired millions of young soccer players around the world she inspired me. "Unlocking the full potential of players who want to follow in Christine's footsteps was a large part of why I got involved with Canada Soccer."

Four members of the England women's soccer team received honours, with captain Leah Williamson awarded an OBE, while the tournament's golden boot winner Beth Mead, defender Lucy Bronze and all-time top scorer Ellen White received MBEs. The team's coach, Dutch national Sarina Wiegman, received an honorary CBE - a type of award given to foreign nationals.
